Get Your Game On!
Writing software using Microsoft's XNA Framework 3.0

Microsoft’s XNA Framework 3.0 is currently in the Community Technical Preview stage. This new version of XNA introduces a new target platform for the framework: the Microsoft Zune. For the first time ever, developers will be able to write games for three different platforms (the PC, the Xbox 360, and the Microsoft Zune) with virtually no code changes from platform to platform. XNA Framework 3.0 games are developed in C# using XNA Game Studio 3.0 which runs within of Visual Studio 2008. We’ll discuss the exciting new developments in XNA (including Xbox LIVE Community Games) and go through a walkthrough demo of some XNA code and deploying that code to an Xbox 360. Should be fun!

Aaron Reed works at Neumont University where he manages relationships with industry partners. He also teaches the XNA game development course at Neumont. He’s just finishing up a book for O’Reilly on game development in XNA (http://www.amazon.com/Learning-XNA-3-0-Aaron-Reed/dp/0596521952/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1215545932&sr=8-1)

What's New

  • Good Sites with Bad Content

I have been getting more phishing e-mail lately that points me to "bad" files on what would normally be "good" sites. Last week I got a message that pointed to index1.htm on a site. Index.htm was the valid home page and appeared to be the personal site for a young lady in Brazil. I couldn't read the page but it didn't look...

  • Reset Password Link as a Security Threat

I read the article at http://redtape.msnbc.com/2008/08/almost-everyone.html about the "Forgot your password" link to reset your password as being a possible attack vector. I think they discussed the security issue quite well and also pointed out that there are no reports that this method has been used widely to attack accounts. I know that...

  • Using an SGEN.exe MSBuild task in TFS Build

Earlier this year I posted an article demonstrating how to use the SGEN.exe utility to generate a serialization assembly. The article identified how to create a custom MSBuild task by editing the project file (e.g., csproj). I've recently come to discover that the MSBuild task will fail when automating a build of the project through TFS Build. The...

  • Vista Defrag Woefully Inadequate - Enter O&O Defrag

Being rather new to Vista this week, I was sorely disappointed to see the severely dumbed down defrag utility in Vista. A pathetic effort. Really! So after a few highly scientific Google searches, I settled on O&O Defrag and could not be happier. Here's the lame, incredibly useless UI in Vista's Disk Defragmenter: And here is only part of...

  • Master pages and their not so master life style

There is no great secrete that I'm letting out of the bag but it is something that I never really had the need to stop and think about, it was just something that I took for granted. Maybe I thought that it worked by some form of magic, maybe I just never cared, but today I'd like to talk about what a master page really is. I always thought...
